H.M.S. Agamemnon was built at Buckler's Hard on the Beaulieu River in Hampshire under the supervision of the reputable master builder, Henry Adams.
Designed by the famous naval architect, Sir Thomas Slade, work started on the Agamemnon in May 1777 and, this 64-gun, Third Rate ship of the line with an elmwood keel nearly 132 feet long, was launched in April 1781. After masting and provisioning at Portsmouth, she commenced her maiden voyage on the 9th July 1781 under the command of Captain Benjamin Caldwell.
It is interesting to note that one of Caldwell's young officers was Thomas Hardy, later to become Nelson's flag-captain at Trafalgar.
The Agamemnon's sixty-four guns comprised twenty-six 24-pounders, twenty-six 18 pounders and twelve 9-pounders. In spite of this considerable armament, in her early years, she was a fast and very manoeuvrable ship.
In 1808 the Agamemnon crossed the Atlantic to Brazil. After taking of the town of Maldonado, she finally ran aground in Maldonado Bay. The condition of her undersides was poor to say at least and, in the manoeuvring around the shoals, the fluke of one of her anchors had penetrated the bottom. Captain Rose had no alternative but to abandon the vessel to its fate.
Following an extended search by marine archaeologists, divers have recently discovered the remains of HMS Agamemnon and, although there is nothing of significance left of the timbers, there are many interesting artefacts that will undoubtedly be treasure to archaeologists and naval historians alike.
