The model is of a flat bottomed vessel, developed from the earlier
tartan design, has a lateen sail and a large flying jib. This particular
vessel, built at arles, would have carried stone or timber to Toulon and
Marseilles. At the zenith of their use in 1845 there were some 125 such
vessels trading in this area. Apperently now all broken up or burnt, their
demise was due to the use of the more commercially viable railway, rather
than the introduction of steam power for shipping.
The kit.
Metal fittings, blocks rigging thread all come bagged up together with
barrels and timber for the deck cargo. The bulkhead frames are the only
parts provided in the pre-cut condition, all the other parts have to be
cut from sheet material. The mast has to be tapered from the length of
12 mm diameter dowel supplied.
