GETTING STARTED IN THE HOBBY
Operating a radio control model is not difficult, but if you are a newcomer to the hobby you will need to learn about new and unfamiliar techniques and equipment. If you live in a large city, there's sure to be a well equipped model shop nearby. The staff will be able to give you advice on the type of model most suitable for your interests and budget and they will either be able to supply what you need from stock or they will be able to order it for you. If you live in a smaller town, contact other modellers for advice on building and operating models and for assistance when you have your model ready to go. Join a club, as other modellers will be able to give advice on sources of supplies, such as a regional supplier or a good mail-order company. Other excellent sources of advice, information and mail-order suppliers are specialist model magazines.
SUPPLIES AND EQUIPMENT FOR GETTING STARTED
Each modeller has his or her own favourite type of model, but you will
need some basic equipment and materials no matter what type you choose.
The first requirement is a model kit (or the materials to build one 'from
scratch'), the motor or engine and the equipment to operate it - a radio
control set, tools for building and operating the model - and a place to
work, even if it's just the kitchen table! On this and the following pages
are ideas and information about the many different types of R/C model available
and what you will need to build and operate them.
GETTING STARTED WITH ELECTRIC-POWERED MODELS
In addition to your model and its electric motor, you will need some other
equipment. The first is a nickel-cadmium (NiCd) battery to power the motor.
This type can be recharged and used again and again. Another necessity
is a charger for the battery. This operates from a 12V car battery and
can re-charge your NiCd battery in about 15-30 minutes. A speed controller
is also needed for the motor. Simple speed controllers are operated by
a servo but an electronic type is more precise.
